The situation: “Reservation required” + a domestic-first app flow

In many Chinese cities, popular museums (and some memorial halls / exhibits) use timed-entry reservations. The problem for first-time visitors is that the reservation UX is often:

  • a WeChat mini-program (sometimes only in Chinese),
  • designed around mainland ID flows, and
  • picky about name formatting and phone verification.

If you see errors like “Chinese ID required” or “real-name verification failed”, don’t brute-force it. Use a passport-safe workflow instead.

If you’re new to the broader pattern, start here: /blog/wechat-mini-program-reservations-without-chinese-id.

What to prepare (10 minutes that saves hours)

Put these in your notes app so you can copy/paste cleanly:

  • Full name exactly as in your passport (watch spacing and middle names)
  • Passport number
  • Nationality
  • Date of birth
  • A reachable phone number for the trip (ideally a mainland +86, but not always required)

If a form keeps rejecting you, try simplifying formatting (remove punctuation, remove extra spaces, match the passport’s uppercase style).

The channels that most often work (in order)

1) Try an alternate official channel (not the mini-program)

Some museums have multiple “official” paths:

  • WeChat mini-program
  • Official WeChat account (menu item that leads to a different booking flow)
  • Official website / partner portal

Even if the branding looks identical, the reservation flow can differ. If one path blocks passports, the other sometimes exposes a passport option.

2) Try the Alipay version of the same reservation

It’s common to find the same service as:

  • WeChat mini-program
  • Alipay mini-program

Foreign-passport handling varies by ecosystem and vendor. If WeChat blocks you, Alipay sometimes works (and vice versa).

3) Use a large, passport-friendly booking channel (when available)

For many ticketed attractions and experiences, a “large platform” path is more passport-friendly because it’s built for:

  • passport name entry,
  • English UI,
  • and customer support when the booking breaks.

Even when you use a platform channel, always confirm:

  • the date + time slot,
  • whether the ticket is real-name tied to your passport,
  • whether you need passport pickup/verification at the entrance.

4) Plan for an on-site / counter fallback (when the venue allows it)

For some museums, you can:

  • arrive early,
  • show your passport,
  • and use a staff-assisted entry workflow (especially on weekdays or off-peak seasons).

For others, reservations are strict and walk-ins are limited. Your goal is to learn this before you cross the city.

Common failure modes (and what to do)

“Chinese ID required”

Treat this as a hard “no” for that channel.

  • Switch channel (Alipay / official site / large platform)
  • Ask your hotel/front desk for the foreigner workflow
  • If the museum is essential, restructure the day around a channel that can issue a passport-tied reservation

Do not enter fake ID numbers or borrow someone else’s identity.

“Real-name verification failed” (even with a passport)

Try:

  • Adjust name formatting (remove hyphens/punctuation, simplify spaces)
  • Retry later (some identity services are flaky)
  • Use a different channel instead of repeating the same one

“Requires mainland China phone number”

Some services require SMS verification to a mainland +86 number.

If you don’t have one:

  • use a hotel/front desk assisted booking,
  • pivot to an alternate channel,
  • or treat that museum as “try on-site early” (if walk-ins are possible).

A clean, realistic fallback plan (so the day doesn’t collapse)

If museum reservations look risky, build your day with an “A/B plan”:

  • Plan A: a reservation-required museum (only if you have a confirmed slot)
  • Plan B: a nearby district walk / riverside / park / market / viewpoint that doesn’t require reservations

That way you still have a great day even if the reservation system is hostile.

Quick checklist for the day-of visit

  • Passport with you (not a photo)
  • Reservation confirmation (screenshot + app access)
  • Correct time slot + entrance location
  • Backup route in the map app for the right gate/pickup point
